Desiree`

Idea behind the song:

I have had many students with stories that break my heart! Desiree` (not her real name) might have had the most heart-wrenching of all. She came to us in the middle of the school year, taken out of a desperate situation. The heartbreak kept coming (it even made the local news). Her sweet and perky attitude toward us and life in general amazed me. I'll NEVER forget her. Our students go through so much! I will never forget how hard middle school was for me...how much harder must it be with the weight of the world on their shoulders?!

Lesson idea:

This song was not really meant for students. I included it on the soundtrack to encourage my colleagues when empathy can be hard to come by (especially when the students show disrespect or anger toward us) . Some of my students have seen more heartache in one day of their young lives than many of us have seen in our lifetimes. We have one of the toughest and most important jobs on earth...and I don't think it is going to get easier. Please keep believing that your care and concern can make a difference.
