Rumors

Idea behind the song:

Last October, my mother passed away. When I returned to school, there were rumors about why I was gone...100% false rumors! Rumors that were absolutely ridiculous! The rumors traveled for miles and miles. If they had been true, I would have been on the news, I would have been fired! (Yet I wasn't so why didn't the rumors stop??) It was my first experience with rumors and boy was it a whopper! I'm an adult and I felt completely powerless to stop it. How must these students feel when that happens to them?

Lesson idea:

Play the telephone game: Make up a detailed sentence (appropriate for your students) and write it down on a piece of paper. . Have the students sit in a circle. Whisper it in the ear of the first person. Have the students pass the information around the circle. See how it gets twisted around by the end. Discuss ways rumors can hurt people. Discuss what students can do when they hear a rumor. Then play the song.
